For Cadette/Senior Girl Scouts, ages twelve and up, we offer......

The Laurel Caverns Speleology IIP

This program may begin at either 9:15 AM or 2:00 PM and offers four divisions which conform to the general divisions for all Girl Scout Interest Project Patch Programs.  They are: Skill Building, Service Project, Technology, and Career Discussion.  Though officially recognized by several Girl Scout Councils this is a uniquely Laurel Caverns program and the interest project patch given to each girl at the end of the program has been specially made for Laurel Caverns.  The key to the popularity of this program is that it allows the scouts to earn a project patch while doing cave exploring .

The caving trip permits scouts to see over two miles of cave covering both the undeveloped cave and a lighted portion.  The trip takes about three hours.  Most of the passages are between ten and forty feet high.  On this exploring adventure there's much climbing over rocks.  Injuries unavoidably occur from this kind of activity: thus, project participants  and their parents must sign a release form.

Click here for Lower Caving Release Form.

Instructions for preparing for this high adventure are provided in this form.  This is the same form which must be used if your troop decides to do just the caving at a cost of $19.00 per participant.  The cost of the Laurel Caverns Speleology IPP, including patch, is only $22.00 per participant.

For all Cadette-Senior Girl Scouts we offer....

The High Adventure Interest Project Patch

Each class is limited to 24 participants.  Programs begin at 9:15 AM and conclude about  2:00 PM .This program begins with a two hour review of the knowledge requirements.  After a 30 minute lunch break the remainder of the time is spent climbing and rappelling.  All instructors for this badge have been certified by the Boy Scouts of America  "climb on safely" program.  All equipment is  supplied by Laurel Caverns and no experience is necessary.  Proper dress involves jeans, long sleeve shirt and shoes with a good climbing tread.  No loose fitting clothing should be worn and long hair must be able to be secured tightly under our helmets.  A failure to follow instructions can result in serious injuries; thus, participants and their parents must sign a release form.  Click here for release form. The patch is given at the end of the program and included in the cost.  Cost: Participants $39 each, Observers $8 each.  PLEASE NOTE: due to high demand and limited capacity for this badge, reservation cancellations must be made at least two weeks prior to the reserved date to qualify for a refund .

In the High Adventure Interest Project Program Patch, the lunch break varies according to the instructor's plan. In all other morning programs, the lunch break is taken from noon until 12:30 P.M. and there is not enough time for a group to return to the campground for lunch. Campers must bring their lunches with them in the morning or an adult may prepare them at the campsite and bring them down to our Visitor's Center at noon. We also have a group lunch program that is available for your convenience. For $5.50 with prior reservations, we will provide our hoagie lunch at the appropriate time.

Junior Girl Scout Adventure Sports Badge

This program takes at least three to three and a half hours to complete.  First the scouts participate in a rock climbing session.  The scouts learn how to prepare their bodies for Adventure Sports through stretching and warming up.  The scouts then are suited up with harnesses and helmets provided by Laurel Caverns and travel into the cave to work on one of our two in cave climbing walls.  They are guaranteed one climb on the wall.  Fewer scouts attending could allow for more climbs.  The climbing portion takes a about an hour to an hour and a half to complete.  The next hour will be map reading and obstacle course session.  Scouts will spend some time in the lighted section of the cave learning hour to read a cave map.  Then they enter one of the unlit rooms of the cave and learn how obstacle courses can increase their physical agility skills.  They will run an "in cave" obstacle course.   The final hour will be spent participating in a cave exploring trip into some of the largest rooms of the cave.

Cost: $17.00 per participant.

Participants will be entering the dark undeveloped portions of our cave.  Scouts and leaders are required to bring two good sources of light.  They should wear comfortable clothes with long sleeves and long pants and also sturdy shoes with good tread and ankle support.  Adults and scouts (with a parent co-signature) are required to sign waivers for this program.  The waivers can be downloaded from this website.  It is all indoors so weather is never a problem.
