Like the traditional Laurel Caverns tour, this tour does not require special equipment or clothing, other than shoes suitable for a natural trail, and a light-jacket or sweater. The factual-information given on the guided tour is replaced with a twelve-minute history, geology, and safety orientation-video. Because this tour option has 143 steps and can be very strenuous for some, participants are allowed to go at their own pace with a staffer near-by. The self-paced option also has the advantage that it allows small children to be more self-expressive and interactive with parents and siblings. This tour’s looped unidirectional route first takes participants through the two largest passages in the lit section of Laurel Caverns, while offering a view of a 45-feet high waterfalls. Then, it takes them into the cave’s upper maze passages, returning them to the Visitors’ Center. Tours depart every 20-minutes. Reservations are not needed.
